Will I Make More Money as an Ultrasound Technician if I Have a Degree?

There are many different factors that can affect how much you can earn as an ultrasound technician. Employers prefer certain credentials, meaning better jobs are opened up to individuals possessing these credentials. Some factors that can affect how much you may earn include certification, specialization, experience and education. Education is one of the biggest factors in determining how much one can earn as a sonographer, and those who have more of an education tend to find they are offered better jobs. Specialization affects earnings greatly too, depending on demand for specialization in that area and on how much specialist skill and knowledge required.

Why is having more of an education helpful?

Throughout life, people will find that having more education generally means more options are opened up. Sonography is no different. Ultrasound technicians with a bachelor’s degree often find they are offered better, higher-paying jobs than individuals who went into a sonography tech program straight from high school. Likewise, those who have registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medicine Sonographers are generally offered better jobs than those who did not sit the exam.

How can specialization influence my earnings?

Within certain areas of medicine, demand for ultrasound technicians is higher than it is in other areas. If your specialization is in an area with a lot of demand for ultrasound technicians, it may be found that you will get offered well paying positions faster than those with a specialization in an area with low demand. An area may be in demand either because it uses sonographers a lot or because not enough sonographers specialize in that area.

Some specializations are more popular amongst sonography students than others. You may find that choosing a speciality that few students go for can be beneficial to you when you start your sonography career. Skill can also affect the amount of money you can earn. Some areas of sonography require more skill and are more demanding, therefore it is likely that jobs in these areas will offer a higher pay.
