When thinking about sonography careers, the first thing people tend to think about is education, opportunities, required skills and potential earnings. After considering these things however, other important questions crop up. It is very important to know if you are able to start a career as an ultrasound technician, and one thing that can stop many individuals being able to take up a whole host of jobs is the background and credit checks that may be essential for the position. Knowing where you need to stand with these is of vital importance in making a decision about what you want your future to be.

Background checks

When working in the health care profession, possessing a criminal record can be a problem and can severely limit career potential. If you have a criminal background, it is important to know which jobs you are disallowed by law from carrying out. Many colleges carry out background checks either prior to entry to the program or right after entry. Some other colleges only carry out the background checks once the student enters a clinical setting. The background checks cover two things: criminal record and substance abuse.

Substance abuse is mostly tested for by random drug testing. The drugs that are tested for are amphetamine, barbiturates, benzodiazepine, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine and methadone. Any student found to have traces of any of these substances in their blood will be removed from the program.

With regard to the criminal record side of things, only certain criminal behaviors result in removal from the program. These are assault/battery, sexual offenses and fraud/theft. Some states can vary however, although these are generally what is looked for by most colleges. Timeframe wise, for misdemeanors, less time is needed between the act and the background check than for convictions. For convictions, it is generally around 15 years and 10 for misdemeanors. It should additionally be noted that – at most colleges – students are required to pay for their own background checks.

Credit checks

Credit checks are not normally carried out for admission to sonography programs. Many employers carry out credit checks as part of their criminal record checks, but having a good credit rating is not a requirement to be an ultrasound technician.
