If you are considering a sonography career, you will need to know what the educational requirements are as well as where the best places to study are. There are multiple ways to get onto sonography tech programs, and various places you can study. It is important to know what your options are so you can make the best decision possible for your future.

The Prerequisites

In order to get into a sonography tech program, you will need to satisfy certain educational requirements. You can get into a program in two ways: straight out of high school or after completing another higher education degree. After you have completed the two year program, you will be awarded an associate’s degree.

If you’re going into the program straight from high school, it is important that you have studied certain subjects. The subjects most important for medical sonography are biology and physics and all school will require that you are familiar with these areas. Maths and English are often essential too, and computing science can also be useful for the training program.

If you have previously attended a higher education institution, you can often complete the sonography tech program in one year rather than two. Your degree must be in either physics or biology, however.

Where am I Able to Study to Become an Ultrasound Technician?

You can study to become an ultrasound technician at a college, a university or even at some hospitals. Not all sonography tech programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, however. Some programs offer a general education in diagnostic sonography with the option to choose a specialty later on, and some start out specialized (these such courses would therefore be best for individuals who feel passionate about a specific area of diagnostic sonography). The Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs has a website that lists all available accredited programs in the US, with the ability to search for programs based on a variety of criteria. This will enable you to get plenty of information with regard to what sonography schools are available.

Can I Study to Become an Ultrasound Technician Online?

There are a few courses available in sonography online. The Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs only lists 3 in the US at the time of writing, and this is largely because ultrasound technician courses are very vocational and therefore are very hands-on. Nevertheless, some individuals may feel an online qualification is the best way to go about becoming an ultrasound technician.
