17 December 2009 No Comment

If you are interested in sonography careers, it is important to know what exactly your options are before you apply for training programs. Ultrasound technicians can be employed in a variety of different environments and have many career options available in the health sector. It is important to know what exactly these career options are before you dedicate yourself to becoming an ultrasound technician.

Where are ultrasound technicians Employed?

Ultrasound technicians can be employed in a number of places. Most often they are employed in hospitals, although it is common for them to be employed in doctor’s offices and clinics too. Some also work in medical laboratories, mobile units and diagnostic imagining centres. Additionally, ultrasound conditions can work on an on-demand basis as independent contractors, working whenever needed for a number of clinics/doctor’s offices.

Which hospital departments do ultrasound technicians work in?

Traditionally, ultrasound technicians mostly always worked in obstetrics/gynecology. However, these days there are a variety of different areas that use sonographers for the diagnosis of a whole variety of conditions.

Obstetrics is still one biggest department option for ultrasound technicians, with ultrasound technology being used on almost all pregnant women at some stage. Cardiac/circulatory sonography however is another big area for employing sonographers. Ultrasound technology can be used for diagnosis of a variety of cardiovascular conditions. Abdominal sonography is another big area. Organs such as the pancreases and the kidneys can be visualized using ultrasound equipment to generate an accurate diagnosis. Other options include neurological sonography (looking at the nervous system and its blood vessels), ophthalmic sonography (looking at the eyes) and breast sonography (in order to detect abnormalities that may be malignant).

What does the Future hold for the Profession?

Demand for ultrasound technicians is expected to rise and it currently at an all time high. The reasons for this are numerous. Firstly, the aging population means that more medical professionals in general are needed than ever to cope with demand. Secondly, people, naturally, want as safe medical procedures as possible, and since sonography has no long-term effects like other imagining techniques (such as X-rays, which use radiation), it is often preferable. Lastly, ultrasound equipment is becoming more and more advanced and therefore is more relevant and applicable than ever for a wider variety of medical areas.
