There are a number of factors that can affect how much an individual can earn as an ultrasound technician. Certain qualities and attributes are seen as ‘better’ and therefore open up more – and higher paid – job opportunities. Some of these attributes include experience, certification, specialization and education. Education is a huge contributor to how much an individual can earn in their sonography career, with individuals with more educational achievements generally getting better jobs. Specialization can also influence how much an individual can earn, as certain specializations may be more in demand or require a higher degree of specialist knowledge and skill.
How much does having more education really affect how much I can earn?
In life in general, having a better education means better career opportunities. The same applies within sonography careers. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree may find they are offered higher-paid positions than those without and that they can progress up the career ladder faster. Having more credentials in general means earning more money. Those individuals who have registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medicine Sonographers will also find they get better career opportunities.
How much can my specialization affect how much I can earn?
There is a different level of demand for sonographers in different areas of medicine. You may find that possessing an in-demand specialization credential means that you are offered more, better-paying positions than someone whose specialization might not be so in-demand. In-demand specializations are those were most sonographers are needed, either due to the fact sonography in that area is used frequently or because they need more sonographers in that area.
Another factor than can influence how much you earn here is the skill required. Some specializations are more demanding than others, and job openings for the most demanding specialities will likely pay a higher salary.
Additionally, certain specializations are offered on sonography programs more than others and some prove to be less popular than others. If you possess a less common specialization, it is likely you could find yourself earning more, faster, since fewer individuals with your specialization will be available for employment.
