Pharmacists are first point of call of suffering people. People with health issues seek the pharmacist’s advice before going to a physician. Pharmacists should be able to understand their patients and their needs. They need to build a long term relationship with them so that they can spot any severe symptoms by chatting with the patients. A pharmacist has to be able to empathize with the patients suffering to maintain the relationship. He has to feel compassion and provide comfort and advice to the patients. Anyone considering pharmacy as a career needs to understand that a lot of hard work goes into studying at pharmacy schools. They hold a considerable responsibility especially pharmacy technicians who may need to perform technical procedures.
Pharmacists should empathize with their patients and they would have to deal with a number of personalities. They should be able to communicate and soothe the patient as a number of them would come to them for advice on their given prescriptions. Pharmacists have to understand the pain and suffering of their patients to be able to respond adequately. They need to feel compassion and that interest in healing human lives would translate into a better pharmacist who keeps a vigilant eye on his patients and monitors their health. Empathy would allow them to deal with the most difficult patients and give them the tolerance needed to deal with tricky situations or unhappy patients. They would anticipate the questions and calm the patient’s fears as well as warn them of any side affects related to their prescribed medication.
Pharmacy technicians may need to draw blood or perform various disturbing procedures that would frighten a number of people of all generations. They need to be gentle in their handling of patients and calm their nerves with the right words said at the right time. They have to realize the fear of the unknown in their patients and hand hold the patients through general check ups. They can react to a patient with sympathy and offer comfort only if they feel compassion for the patients suffering. A patient is more likely to open up and talk to a friendly pharmacist since a number of people have an irrational fear of physicians and hospitals. It is the pharmacist’s duty to listen and empathize all the while steering them in the right direction with words of encouragement. A good pharmacist would care about his patient’s health and safety and that would keep him alert and sharp during long working hours.
