Pharmacy Tech Careers: Employment Credit Checks?

When trying to decide whether a career as a pharmacy tech is an appropriate choice or not, many individuals fail to realize that there are often other things required in addition to education and training. Before enrolling in any pharmacy technician programs, a person must ensure that they are an appropriate candidate for employment. One of the most common requirements of employers is a credit check and it is important for an applicant to be prepared. Although some employers did not check an applicant’s credit history in the past, state and federal laws now mandate that anybody with access to controlled drugs or narcotics submit to a complete background check. An acceptable background check must include both a criminal search and a credit check.
Because a pharmacy tech position also typically involves cash handling, employers usually pay close attention to the credit report. Many employers are not as worried about an occasional late payment on a credit card or installment loan, but are not impressed with charge offs or repossessions. Individuals with horrendous credit are often perceived as more likely to steal from their employer. Individuals with poor credit should be prepared to explain delinquencies and other possible negative items. Some blemishes, such as judgments or liens, may prove to be much more detrimental to the possibility of securing a position as a pharmacy technician. Any extenuating circumstances should be explained in their entirety and a prospective pharmacy tech should understand that it is absolutely better to be honest than to attempt to conceal anything.
