Physical Therapy Degree Requirements

In order to become a physical therapist a person will be required to obtain at least a master’s degree. The start of the educational process for a physical therapist is obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in health or clinical science with a focus on physical therapy. A bachelor’s degree in physical therapy will be focused on preparing a student to continue on to graduate school. The general requirements of a bachelor’s degree will be focused heavily in the areas of science including biology, physiology, anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry and physics. Statistics as well as algebra and trigonometry will also be required. A physical therapy student will want to take electives that are specific to the degree. Some of these include massage, musculoskeletal assessment, physiology, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy.

When continuing on in their education a master’s degree in physical therapy will include more intense courses on subject matters such as orthotics and prosthetics, pathokinesiology, orthopedics, neurology, geriatrics, cardiac and pulmonary testing and pediatrics. Most students choose to obtain their masters from the same school as their bachelors. It will take between six and seven years to complete this program. Another educational track that should be considered is a six year program that combines a bachelor’s degree with a doctorate in physical therapy. These programs will require significant dedication in the field. Most times a doctoral student will be required to research a current problem in the field in order to make a contribution to the industry. Clinical work will also be required during the time spent as a doctoral student.
