Border Patrol Application Process and Qualification
The border patrol is the department that is in charge of protecting the United States borders from illegal aliens, drugs, and other contraband materials from passing through. Since the attacks on September 11th, the border patrol also protects the country from terrorists. The border patrol employs over 58,000 people nation wide. If a person is interested in applying for a position with the United States border patrol the first step will be to look for any job openings within the department. When choosing a position with the border patrol there will be specified qualifications, an individual must meet in order to apply. While each position may have a different set of qualifications specified, there are specific credentials required for every position within the department. These credentials include that a person must not be over the age of 40 when they apply. A person applying for a position with the border patrol must be a U.S. citizen of at least three years and have a valid driver’s license. If the basic requirements to become a border patrol agent are met, a written test will be scheduled. After applying and scheduling the written test online, the individual will need to print out the information as to where the test will be taken. The written test consists of an assessment of job related skills, logical reasoning, and a Spanish language section, or artificial language test if Spanish is not spoken.
If the written test is passed, your name will be placed on a list of potential candidates for the position. If you are chosen for a position, you will be sent a tentative offer and will need to schedule an oral interview with a panel of agents. There are also physical fitness tests, drug test, medical examination, and a background investigation a person must go through before being sent to the academy for training. The hiring process for the border patrol can take anywhere from six to nine months depending on each individual’s circumstances. Once the process is completed, the applicant will attend a 55-day training camp before being sent to their first job.
