Border Patrols Careers
When considering a law enforcement career, one may want to look into working for the United States Customs and Border Protection agency or CBP. There are currently over 58,000 people employed through this agency that work both within the United States and overseas. The focus of the CBP is to ensure the security of the nation’s borders. Keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the country is the top priority for the department. If any person tries to enter the U.S. illegally, it is the job of the border patrol to apprehend them. There are several different career choices within the CBP that a person may consider.
Finding a Job in the Border Patrol
The first step in the application process for the border patrol is to go to the USA jobs website and search for open positions. It is important to read all of the qualifications that are required for the job an individual may be interested. If there is an opening available that matches your qualifications, it is time to apply for the vacancy. The application will be different depending on the role that is being applied for. The most important aspect of the application process is to follow the specific directions exactly as they are outlined. Once the application is completed, it will be sent for evaluation and depending on your qualifications will be given a number. During this waiting period, a person will receive notifications on whether their application has been accepted and the status of the process. If your application makes the top of the list, you will be contacted for an interview. It is important to understand that there are key requirements a person must meet in order to be considered for any job within the border patrol. These requirements include: U.S. citizenship, no felony convictions, resident of the nation for at least 3 years, be under the age of 40, submit to drug testing, have a valid driver’s license, undergo a background investigation, and pass physical fitness evaluations.
Career in Border Patrol
Once offered a position within the border patrol the process can take anywhere from six to nine months in order to go through the hiring process. The hiring process will require an individual to take a medical exam and a fitness test. The entrance examination will consist of a three part test that includes an assessment of past experiences, logical reasoning, and either a Spanish language test or an artificial language test that predicts your ability to learn Spanish. After passing these initial examinations, an individual will then begin the training process. This is a 55-day course, which a person will be required to learn all of the ins and outs of the border patrol agency. They will then be assigned their station along the border and will be on a probationary period of two years before becoming a full-time border patrol agent.
