Everything About Becoming a Dental Assistant You Will Ever Need to Know

Dental assistants supply diverse types of patient care, office chores and laboratory responsibilities. They sanitize and sterilize the dentist equipment, apply topical anesthetics to gums, organize and prepare the instruments and materials necessary to care for each patient, and acquire and update patients’ dental information. While the dentist is implementing the actual procedure the assistant works with the dentist to provide support. They also coach patients on aftercare and general oral healthcare. Dental assistants with laboratory obligations make casts of patients teeth and mouth, clean and shine removable devices, and make provisional crowns.

Assistants with office duties schedule and verify appointments, accept patients, sustain treatment records, send invoices, accept payments and purchase dental supplies. Dental assistants must work directly with and under the direction of dentists. Assistants must work in brightly-lit, hygienic environments and follow safety measures to protect themselves and their patients from contagious diseases. It is imperative to specify that Dental assistants do not perform the same duties as Dental hygienists are licensed to dispatch. According to statistics as of 2008 Dental assistants occupied about 295,000 jobs. Majority were employed in dentists’ offices. Some worked in physicians offices or were hired by Federal, state or local governments.
