Materials and Procedures for Today?s Dental Assistant
Numerous assistants acquire their skills on the job, even though an increasing number are educated in dental-assisting programs accessible thru community and junior colleges, trade schools, technical schools and the military. Most curriculums take 1 year to complete. In order for assistants to carry out more complex duties, or have the skills to complete radiological procedures many provinces require Dental assistants to attain a license or certification. To become an entry level Dental assistant there are no prescribed education or training requirements. To get a good start though High school students should take courses in chemistry, health, biology and office etiquette. In 2009 the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved 281 dental-assisting instruction programs.
Programs consist of laboratory, classroom and preclinical training in dental-assisting proficiency and related theory. The majority of programs require 1 year to complete. Upon achievement a certificate or diploma is rewarded. Longer programs such as 2 year training courses offered in community and junior colleges give associate degrees when finished. All students must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Some schools require science or computer-related studies for admission. There are a few private vocational school that offer 4-6 month training courses in dental assisting but aren’t recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
