The PTA Handbook: Keys to Success in School and Career for the Physical Therapist Assistant

Candidates for the physical therapy assistant exam must meet the eligibility requirements for the state in which they wish to work. Most will require proof of graduation from a physical therapy assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education and the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy must certify that the program is recognized and approved. The exam is computer based, with two hundred questions in a multiple choice format and consists of three sections, Tests and Measures, Intervention and Standards of Care. The exam score is converted to a scale of two hundred to eight hundred, with a minimum score of six hundred required to pass. Students have four hours to complete the exam. Exams are administered by Thomson Prometric throughout the year in various locations around the country.

The outlook for future physical therapy assistant careers is a bright one. The aging population of the United States is resulting in a greater need for practitioners in the field, a need that will continue to grow. Another trend effecting the field of physical therapy is the aging of the workforce. Statistically, fewer people are seeking careers in physical therapy and as the existing workforce ages and enters retirement, those positions will remain unfilled.
