Veterinarian Careers: Past, Present and Future.

A veterinarian is an individual who is responsible for the care and treatment of sick or injured animals. With pet owners today seeking better and more qualitative medical care for their pets, it becomes necessary to provide a level of quality and service that far exceeds any standards that were established previously. The innovations and advancements of the 21st century has aided in bringing about great changes in the field of veterinary practice. However, the most important change over the years has to be in the quality of medical care that veterinary professionals are today able to provide their patients. Veterinarians in practice today find themselves better equipped with more advanced instruments to deal with anything from diagnosis & treatment to preventive care. In addition to this, the industry has also seen a surge in the compensation rates of professionals in the field, with the average entry-level practitioner earning anywhere around $60,000 to $70,000 i.e. depending on other circumstances as well. This has resulted in severe competition within the field.  However, one should always bear in mind that financial motivations are seldom the driving factor behind this career choice, and individuals who pursue this course of action for solely that purpose may find themselves inadequate in performing the duties required of them.


The veterinary industry is a growing field, today it incorporates within it all the departments and specialties that one is likely to find in the human medical industry, as such one who chooses to become a veterinarian has a plethora of opportunities available to them, ranging from dermatology, cardiology to virology and zoological medicine. In addition, one who pursues one of the aforementioned specialties is also likely to earn a higher income as a result of their efforts. Additionally, in today’s word of swine flu’s and bird fevers, one can only imagine the kind of mayhem that may have resulted had it not been for the combined efforts of the veterinarians in practice today along with the doctors from the human medical industry. Indeed today a veterinarian finds herself/himself an indispensable part of developed society.


Veterinary services is not an easy career path to follow. However for the right type of individual, veterinary holds a number of opportunities to be grasped, from a veterinary technician to a veterinary pharmacist. Individuals with a passion and love for animals, along with a dedication to service will find that this can prove to be one of the most rewarding careers one can be involved in.
