Veterinarian Careers – Background and Credit Checks

15 February 2010 3 Comments

Background checks and credit checks are an essential part of any profession. Employers like to feel assured in the knowledge that their potential employees are good, honest & trustworthy individuals. Similarly, a potential career in veterinary service may also imply that a candidate’s past maybe scrutinized for information on the stability and “hire-ability” of the individual in question. In addition, as related to private practices and the like, some clients like to check into the background of the local veterinarian before making a choice as to whom to see. It also becomes vital in case of specific positions within veterinary, such as veterinarian pharmacist who has access to narcotics and drugs; needless to say, in such a situation individuals with a criminal past maybe entirely ineligible for selection, barring a few exceptional circumstances. A veterinarian should be by nature, a caring and compassionate individual and as such would not be in such a situation as to develop a shady past such as a criminal record However, concerning credit ratings, an individual does not necessarily require a perfect financial standing in order to qualify or be eligible for a career in veterinary services.

Furthermore, even though a veterinary doctor is unlikely to be subjected to a background/credit check, in some states the licensing examination may hold a requirement for a background/credit check. This can be simply clarified by approaching the local licensing body, or a veterinarian in the area. It is to be noted that in case of specific veterinary related jobs such as veterinary technician, some states hold a mandatory background/credit checks as requirements for eligibility for appearing for a licensing exam. There are some exceptions to this procedure however, such as in case of individuals who have a history in violence or fraud. Individuals who exhibit signs of anti-social or cruel behavior towards other beings can rarely be considered a fair choice for a veterinarian; as such these types of past offences will more than likely disqualify one from a career in veterinary services. A few offenses that may be considered detrimental to a veterinary career include – domestic violence, cruelty to animals, abuse, fraud, drug use or possession etc.

Although a background check or credit check may not be a mandatory requirement for most veterinary positions and a good rule in life, is to be prudent enough to lead a smart and responsible way of life. One who wishes to be a veterinarian should be an individual who can be looked to as a role model, both by the society and by her/his peers.  All the former stated information however, is subject to of course individual circumstances and one should not be discouraged from pursuing a career in veterinary, just because one made a few mistakes along the way. What matters in the end, is character, commitment, compassion and dedication to one’s chosen path in life.
