The field of veterinary is an ever-developing field that has a multitude of available opportunities for the qualified individual. One of the most prominent veterinary positions short of becoming a veterinarian is to opt to become a veterinary technician. Veterinary technicians play an integral role in a veterinary practice. Vet technicians are mainly the ‘second in command’ in terms of administering medical care. They serve as an aid to the veterinarian in performing procedures and more often than not, maybe called on to perform some procedures themselves.
Additionally, a vet tech position allows the individual to further opportunities in the field both as a care giver and in terms of pharmaceutical sales, being allowed to become veterinary pharmacists as well. It is also worthy of note that most individuals who wish to experience a veterinary practice first hand before committing to a career in veterinary may choose to work as volunteer vet technicians. This will aid them in gaining a proper understanding of what it means to work in a veterinary practice and allow them to gauge if this is indeed the career path that they wish to follow. Becoming a fully fledged, paid veterinary technician requires first for the prospect to hold at the very least an associates’ degree in order to be accepted into an institution offering a three year course on veterinary technician.
An important point of note at this juncture, there are institutions that offer courses in veterinary technician studies that are certified and non- certified. While both types of institutions will result in a degree per se, a degree from an unrecognized institution will disqualify one from being eligible to appear for the vet technician licensing examination. Thus, it is very important that the prospect chooses a recognized institution in one’s local area before proceeding further. For the sake of impartiality, this article shall not name any specific schools of study.
Alternatively, one may choose to opt for an online course offered through the distance learning facilities of some of the more prominent recognized institutions. While the valid of the degree is the same in any case, the value of taking the course online may prove to be fundamentally different, therefore the prospect is advised to make an informed decision by visiting and learning about the features that their select school has on offer as regards to distance learning.
